A mathematical model derived to represent the dynamic behaviour of the mechanical transmission was utilized to provide quantitative information relating to shift effort. The performance of the vehicle was assessed for both a conventional transmission and a transmission with increased input pinion inertia. Consideration was given to operation of the vehicle in both an on-road and an off-road environment. From an analysis of the causal relationships within the system it was possible to account for the respective shift effort values obtained. The main conclusion from this study is that when assessing the shift effort of a vehicle, the transmission cannot be considered in static isolation from the external environment over which the vehicle is traversing. This has been particularly shown to be the case when consideration is given to operation of the vehicle within an off-road environment. Furthermore, the dynamics within the powertrain cannot be ignored. Uniform motion of the imput pinion cannot be assumed, particularly when the resulting synchronization time is greater than the time constant of the transmission. In addition, from an understanding of the transmission dynamics, it can be shown that for a given value of hand-ball force there is a maximum attainable value of pinion velocity. The result is that some gear change manoeuvres are not physically realizable. This is particularly pertinent when the vehicle is traversing a steep incline in an off-road environment. Finally, the effect of increasing the inertia of the input pinion was found to increase the synchronization time for both up-shift and down-shift type gear change manoeuvres.
