Mixed-materials construction will play an increasingly important role in future automotive concepts. Both political and economic forces play a role in the implementation of lightweight construction, with 'intelligent lighthweight construction' as the ultimate goal. Since in this type of construction joining technology plays a key role in determining the functionality and properties of the object in question, special attention is paid to development of these joining technologies. Here, a number of different joining methods for mixed-materials construction are presented, and solution strategies for the problems associated with thermal joining are demonstrated. In particular, the integration of joining-technology development in the product-development process, and the use of process simulation for reducing development times, are discussed.
