Power Point Presentation. Weight has been one of the major design challenges for carmakers ever since the first motor vehicles were built over a hundred years ago. Today it has become more important than ever. OEM's forceful demand for sound packages with dramatically lower weight (less than 50 %) originated with the need to build vehicles with much improved fuel economy. Rieter Automotive's Rieter Ultra Light concept was developed in response. With a now approach to sound management, weight can be significantly reduced by 35 % or more with no loss of performance. The breakthrough in vehicle sound control technology is based on shifting emphasis from insulation (reflection). Here treatments increase dissipation by absorption, requiring lightweight components for the total acoustic package. Consequently the application of the Rieter Ultra Light system requires a variety of material configurations for many different components. The multi layer material sandwiches are mainly textile/textile or textile/foam composites. The different solutions will be described.
