Air Force aircraft encounter constant rain and dust erosion during flight. Due to increasing optical missile threats more low gloss rain erosion coatings are being used on aircraft. Air Force coating customers are also moving to lighter colors by requiring them to match the aircraft color. Coating manufacturers are currently meeting these requirements with the use of more pigmentation, flatting agents and extenders, which decreases the life of the coatings. Under this SBIR Phase I contract, Hontek Corporation has developed a new series of sprayable rain erosion coatings that are far superior to the current commercial products. When tested at 223.4 meters per second speed, and 2.54 cm per hour rainfall on aluminum airfoil substrates, a well-known commercial rain erosion coating system showed widespread erosion to substrate in less than 41 minutes. In contrast, many of Hontek's coatings survived 130 to 260 minutes with only a few isolated damaged spots, which are still far from failure. The 85 degree gloss of the matte topcoats (color 36173) for the above specimens ranges from 1.9 to 4.2, which is below the target range of 3.5-5.0. Hontek's developmental coatings last up to 6 times as long as the well-known commercial product on the market.
