A complete CVT controller development cycle has been traversed using a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) approach. By using a vehicle emulation tool, a dramatic shift in the work bias away the vehicle is achieved. The prototype ECU hardware and algorithm is developed, tested and commissioned prior to implementation on the vehicle. The key benefits to the development process includes improved consistency, repeatability, and reliability of tests as well as easier debugging of hardware and software faults. This directly translates into improvements in the quality and time-scale of the deliverable. Fuzzy logic driver adaption is a key concept in this project. The ability to adapt the response of the powertrain to the demands of driver and the road condition by a high level intelligent agent brings closer to the day when a car manufacturers can automatically customise the vehicle feel to the specific needs of the customer. It also provides an important engineering tool for the car manufacturers to impart its specific brand qualities to the vehicle.
