In this article a new control system design for an SI engine is presented, that is based on the accurate measurement and analysis of the pressure in the combustion chamber. The developed sensor shows a high accuracy and can be produced at low costs. Compared to already available sensors, it has the ability of measuring the in-cylinder pressure in the combustion and the gas exchange phase. Based on the measured signal, algorithms were designed for the control of ignition timing and injection. All functions presented rely on physical relations, that allow a fast parameterisation and easy portability to new engine designs. Simulations of the control system show accurate results and benefits for emissions and fuel consumption may be expected. The implementation of all algorithms was performed on a flexible prototyping system using MatrixX and extensive tests in a Mercedes-Benz E-class are currently ongoing.
