Since passvie safety has been improved significantly in the last years there is a tendency to improve the side proctection of the occupants. Actually there is given high priority towards injuries due to airbag deployments. The target will be now to improve the deployment behavior and to minimize the energy given to an occupant in out-of-position situations. To reach an excellent protection the Bio Adapted Side Bag was developed, a dual chamber airbag which covers the pelvic, the abdomen, and the thorax. The paper at first describes current thorax airbag systems which are either located in the door trim or within the seatback cushion. The following different bag configurations are described: - thorax bag, - pelvic bag, - thorax pelvic, - fond seat thorax airbag. The today's thorax airbag working principle is discussed. The bio adapted airbag system will be installed in the seat frame or seat back cushion and is driven by one inflator. There are two separate chambers in the bag - the pelvic chamber and the thorax chamber. To avoid highloads in the abdominal area of the occupant the two pressurized areas are separated by a seam. The main advantages of the bio adapted airbag system are: - good adjustment to the bio mechanics of the occupant, - possibility for simple, vehicle-dependent tuning, - filling time thorax bag < 12 ms, - filling time pelvic bag < 8 ms, - application of one gas inflator, - more design and styling freedom for the door trim, - package room, - cost optimized and compact design. The out-of-position test examples performed following the TWG test procedures haven't shown critical test results. This statement is based on test examples in different platforms and bag configurations.
