The car and the road environment should be adapted to suit the abilities and limitations of the driver to provide as much protection and safety as possible. The holistic approach of Volvo to car safety is presented in this paper. The work has been concentrated on the people, the vehicle and the traffic environment during these three time phases: - before the accident, - during the actual impact, - after the accident. The aim has been to avoid accidents, prevent accidents and reduce injuries. To succeed in this area, the activities include participating in the development of driving schools, as well as traffic planning. Volvo's safety strategy covers the entire spectrum of active safety, which is split into three areas: preventive, dynamic, and collision avoidance plus the security aspects of property and personal threats. The proceedings of a car manufacturer to realise the goals and build safer cars in every respect are: - wise use of technology (e.g. automatic emergency call), - fine-tuned protection (microprocessors); - new types of airbag; - pre-crash-studies; - virtual crash tests; - crash simulator, - efficient prediction model. At last the new Volvo whiplash protection system is introduced.
