The Asgard Development has opened a new area of the Norwegian Continental Shelf for direct export of natural gas to the European Continent. The development comprises a new gas and oil field unit, 1400 km of 42 inch pipeline and additional processing facilites for the export gas. Offshore production installations at Asgard are based entirely on floaters and subsea systems. The rich gas from the field is being processed in a new plant at the existing gas terminal at Karsto in Norway. This paper presents a general perspective of the overall development. Project management, technical complexities and technologies are highlighted and illustrates why the Asgard development chain must be regarded as a unique industrial undertaking.
