Traditional submarine pressure hulls are made from steel cylinders reinforced with circumferential stiffening rings welded to the inside. Without these stiffening rings, buckling of the shell would occur at pressures of only a fraction of that required to cause axisymmetric yield of the structure. An alternative method of increasing the shell and general instability resistance of cylindrical pressure vessels is to 'swedge-stiffen' them by the introduction of corrugations (resembling those of a shallow bellows) into the outer cylinder. An analogy can be drawn with the stiffness of sheet material compared with a corrugated sheet made from material of the same thickness. This idea was first presented by Ross (1987), whose investigations have shown that swedge shaped vessels are structurally more efficient than their conventional ring stiffened equivalents. A theoretical and an experimental investigation was carried out, where a carbon fibre corrugated circular cylinder was tested to destruction under external hydrostatic pressure. The theoretical investigation was via the finite element method, where the structure was modelled with several orthotropic axisymmetric thin-walled shell elements. The experimental observations were aided with strategically placed strain gauges. Comparison between theory and experiment showed that the experimentally observed buckling pressure was a little lower than the theoretical prediction. This may have been due to the fact that the model had slight initial geometrical imperfections in the circumferential direction.
