As alternative and supplement to the joining processes used in the automotive industry, the plasma brazing process offers interesting features. This process is characterised by a separate material and energy input and therefore splash-free, optically appealing seams with very good mechanical properties can be produced. In the context of a research project the characteristics of plasma-brazed seams are to be examined also at high-strength steels. Parallel to these investigations further development of a suitable plasma torch and power source as well as the adaptation of brazing either carries on. First results of this very dose-to-applications operated research were presented. An application example, the plasma brazing in the body shop in the manufacturing of the 3-Liter-car Lupo at Volkswagen was introduced.
