Fracture charging or ballooning effects were evaluated while drilling high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) wells. A method based on analytical and numerical approaches for estimating the volumetric expansion of wellbores as a function of wellbore pressure is presented. Analysis showed that the diametric expansion of wellbore must be in the range of centimeters at the critical pressure and consumed a significant number of extra mud barrels before breakout.
