With the introduction of the Euro 4 emission legislation for commercial vehicles in Europe 2005, a significant decrease of particulate and NOx emission will be required. In addition to the European Steady State Cycle ESC and the European Load Response Test ELR, a transient test (European Transient Cycle ETC) will be mandatory. Truck Diesel engines are facing increasing requirements regarding fuel economy, pollutant and noise emission, specific power, and durability. Over the last years, the fuel injection system turned out to be the key component to determine an engine's competitiveness. Due to this fact, Deutz is continuously examining options of fuel injection systems for utilization in current and future truck engine concepts. Amongst other technology, Common Rail injection was studied thoroughly due to its pressure flexibility and its modular and easily adaptable concept. In a research project, the newly developed series 2013 engine was equipped with a Bosch heavy duty CR system capable of pre- and post-injection. The project targeted on approaching EU4 emission standard without exhaust gas aftertreatment. Different injection strategies were studied together with a sophisticated turbo charging and EGR system.
