After a development history of almost 70 years, the car diesel engine has experienced new relevance in the last ten years. While the pre-chamber or swirl chamber engines with their two-stage combustion processes were predominant in development activities for car diesel engines in the past, the direct injection (DI) diesel engine now clearly leads the field. New technologies in the field of fuel injection, turbocharging and emissions control have led to a new generation of direct injection diesel engines for cars which are progressively displacing the previous pre-chamber engines in the market. Multiple injection and further increases in injection pressures will characterize technological developments in future, also with a view to improving stricter legal standards. New trends are also recognizable in the field of turbocharging and lightweight engine construction. These will not only consolidate the position of the diesel In the future car market, but even extend it. Major challenges must still be overcome in the field of emission control. The DENOX catalytic converter and the particulate filter are major areas which must be addressed by future technological development if the success story of the direct-injection diesel engine is to be continued. The approaches for these developments are described below.
