The availability of electric vehicles is a key factor in achieving a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. The use of NiCd batteries is now being superseded by Li-ion cells. High energy Li-Ion batteries have a power/energy ratio of between 2:1 and 3:1. They are ideal for all traction applications, especially electric vehicles. A number of problems remain to be solved prior to a successful commercial launch in 2004. These include temperature control and electronic control.
