Rapid transit systems are continually evolving to meet the demands of modern life. Solutions are currently becoming available to address the problem of moving visitors over a distance of a few hundred metres within theme parks and other major attractions. The moving walkway, first used at the beginning of the 20th century, is experiencing something of a renaissance with 3 projects currently under way in Japan, one in Australia and one in France. The latter is being built by the Paris Public Transport Authority (RATP) and will enter service at the Montparnasse Metro station at the beginning of 2002. The moving walkway will carry 10 000 passengers per hour at a speed of 15 km/h over distances between 200 and 500 metres. The requirement for acceleration and deceleration zones has demanded the use of complex mechanical systems.
