A FCEV program driven by the car manufacturers PSA and RENAULT has started in September 1999. The special thermal aspects are investigated with VALEO active contribution. The heat dissipation of FCEV is approximately up to 2.5 to 3 times greater than that of comparable power of Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle (ICEV). Moreover, a fuel cell powertrain needs two temperature levels : a 'high' level for the fuel cell stack and a 'low' level for electrical, electronic components and other auxiliaries. Two cooling loops will be presented : the first loop using deionised water as coolant and the second one using an ethylene-glycol-water mixture as coolant. Air conditioning (A/C) is another major aspect of the Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle thermal management. In order to reach its commercial targets, no thermal comfort degradation can be tolerated when compared with conventional vehicles. Furthermore, the electrical source availability creates the condition to introduce an enhanced comfort level. Mainly, winter preheating and summer precooling of the cabin become possible. The use of an electrical compressor also suppresses the comfort degradation at vehicle stop. The A/C components can be grouped in an A/C module developed by Valeo with zero refrigerant leakage in use. This entails strong refrigerant charge reduction and avoids refrigerant leaks caused by accidents. The A/C module can be placed for example in the cockpit or under the floor.
