The RXiHP2 Environmental Control System has been designed from the ground up specifically for EVs and HEVs (including heating, cooling, ventilating and dehumidifying/defrosting). The main components of the system are a compact energy regenerator, a thermal storage accumulator and a high performance heat pump. A feasibility study has been done. Then, two prototypes have been tested in a climate chamber. Comprehensive performance analysis and testing, but also a comparison with other systems have highlighted many benefits of using RXiHP2 in EVs operating in cold climates. At these levels of efficiency, Groupe Enerstat's Environmental Control System for EVs will require 54 % less energy than EVs HVAC systems currently available. Unlike conventional air/air heat pumps, RXiHP2 can operate at temperatures as low as 25 deg C without significant loss of effectiveness. Energy regeneration allows for constant exchange of the cab's air and optimum air quality with efficient deicing of windows without serious energy expenditure. RXiHP2 offers a further advantage for the promotion of Evs. The RXiHP2 system is flexible enough to be readily adaptable to the needs of different categories of automobiles or utility vehicles, such as vans and buses, and even hybrid vehicles. The system maintains optimum comfort, air quality, humidity control and deicing as soon as the vehicle is started, even at temperatures below 20 deg C which represents a distinct advantage even over conventional ICE vehicles.
