In a conventional vehicle all the accessories are driven by the heat engine. The accessories, namely, power steering pump, air-conditioning compressor, water pump and the alternator are mounted an the Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD) of the engine. In a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), the operating scenario and the powertrain are completely different. Power is supplied to the vehicle by the heat engine and an electric motor. Since there are two energy sources in the HEV environment, the accessories on the engine can be driven differently to perform the conventional vehicle functions. The unique accessory drive helps reduce frictional losses, lowers weight of the power train and improves the fuel economy. The increased fuel economy due to the unique FEAD adds to the already higher fuel economy that a HEV provides. This paper presents the FEAD design, its features, simulation and test results in the dynamometer and on hybrid vehicles developed under Fords Department of Energy (DOE) / Midwest Research Institute (MRI) hybrid electric vehicle propulsion system program.
