Motor vehicles in the 20. century have brought comfortable and convenient life, yet on the other hand, have become one of the major causes of air and noise pollution and traffic jams-particularly in urban areas. Electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to be one of the solutions to these problems since they create no emission gas and less noise and vibration. However,EVs still have some limitations such as short cruising range and high cost, which have prevented them from being widely accepted. Toyota recognizes these issues and is aware that most urban car use involves short distance driving with one or two occupants. Thus, Toyota has developed a shared-use system 'Crayon', using a fleet of 2-seater EV commuters called 'e-com'. Crayon is expected to be used for business purposes in urban areas, for second car demands in residential areas, and for personal use by tourists in natural preserves or resorts where ecological mobility is needed.
