After some years of silence, PM aluminium seems to recover again. Ecological requirements, mainly in the automotive industry lead to efforts concerning weight reduction to minimize fuel consumption as well as emissions. Apart from typical cast aluminium products already used today, also the PM industry is able to realize weight reduction by the replacement of steel components by aluminium parts. The component itself does not contribute too much to the mentioned target, but very often, peripheric parts or systems can be designed in a more effective way to reduce weight. In this context, the presentation will focus on some case studies, where cast grey iron or medium performance PM steels are replaced by PM aluminium alloys.
