Smaller engine compartments together with increasing engine performance will require more of cooling airflow in the engine compartment. In addition there is an increasing number of heat exchanger. Since larger cooling air intake openings will deteriorate aerodynamic drag, this will result in a typical target conflict. The thermal management of the engine compartment has to be optimized in the early program phase. Based on engine and component heat rejection, heat exchanger, cooling air intake openings and the engine compartment package, a trade off between the different sub systems will be investigated. CAE systems for Airflow (UHeD), Hydraulics (FLOWMASTER) and Heat Protection (RadTherm) will allow a systems approach before first prototypes are available.
