The European Pipeline Research Group (EPRG) has conducted a substantial test programme over many years to address the issue of external damage, and this has resulted in an EPRG database consisting of 310 test results, of which 75 were performed on ring specimens and 235 on pressurised pipe sections. This document, prepared by the Subcommittee on External Damage, summarizes the current views of EPRG regarding the assessment and prevention of external damage. The document provides statements concerning critical defect dimensions on the basis of the available experimental data. Tools are provided to assist with damage prevention, these being the result of research into the ability of pipelines to resist loading applied by mechanical excavators. The procedures to be followed to prevent, assess or repair defects are outside the scope of this document, and are the concern of the company or the individual responsible for the pipeline. Where possible, conservative rules of thumb are indicated. These provide operational personnel in the field with an easy and conservative method for the assessment of the damage resistance or behaviour of the pipeline. For more detailed use of the EPRG models two kinds of correlation are given; firstly, the best estimate correlations giving the best assessment for the damage described by the EPRG model; and secondly, conservative correlations that incorporate adjustment factors to define the lower bound for the data. The conditions leading to the development of denting and puncture damage are addressed. The behaviour of gouges, plain dents and dent/ gouge combinations are discussed.
