Although the use of high-strength or highest-strength (grade X 80 to grade X 100) linepipe in the construction of gas transmission pipelines has not progressed at a pace probably predicted in the beginning, the developments in this respect are of importance to the pipe manufacturer. This paper summarises and discusses the work carried out by the authors, which included both laboratory investigations and four mill trials. The fourth mill trial has been made recently using optimised chemistry and fully optimised production parameters. The results available today are presented. Deformability and crack arresting capability of grade X 100 pipe, which are of importance to its performance in service, are discussed. The paper also assesses, on the basis of the current knowledge, production weld properties such as seam weld strength, seam weld toughness, and HAZ softening as well as the aspects of girth welding in the field.
