To reduce the wheel pair flanges and rail wear, a plunger-type grease dispenser Trackmaster (KLS product) has been used experimentally in Russian railroad transport since 1996, after positive results achieved by the Latvian railroad system. Four different locomotives were involved in the project (mileage up to 60000 km). Molybdenum sulfide-based grease PUMA was used in the experiments. The wheel shroud wear, energy consumption and dispenser damage frequency were determined experimentally. A decrease in electric energy consumption by 16.9 % and an increase in locomotive wheel pair lifetime by 20 % to 180 % were found. No shortening of braking distance on straight sections was observed. Use of an SPL grease was recommended for commercial practice.
