Autocouplers belong to the most important elements of freight and passenger cars equipment. They are responsible both for the transport safety, operational efficiency and traveling comfort. The conventional autocoupler type SA-3 used in Soviet Union and Russia since 50-ies does not meet the modern requirements in this respect and shows a low wear resistance under dry friction conditions and high dynamic loads (2.5 MN to 3.5 MN). Some attempts were made to use a silentblock flexible Sharfenberg-type autocoupler for electric trains type ER-200. The autocouplers are operated jointly with shock-absorbing devices type R-2P and R-5P with rubber-metal pairs which are not suitable for the freight trains. The liquid elastomer-based shock absorbers are now under study in the Russian test train Sokol. For the goods wagons of a new generation, especially for the tip wagons, American ASF-type autocouplers ASF-type were lately developed. For the wagons transporting dangerous goods, the shock absorbers connected with American 'floating' skid rails were recommended.
