Xcel Energy has several operating companies maintaining 2547 miles of transmission lines, 16512 miles of distribution mains and serves about one million gas customers. Most odorizers with injection-type units are located at city gate stations, gas storage facilities, gas processing plants, and other custody transfer points. After being faced with some problems to fulfil the GOA (gas odor assurance) standards the shortcomings were corrected by providing detailed specifications for the actual LEL (lower explosive limit), sniff test system definition, testing frequency, the acceptable range of sniff test readings, and required actions for unacceptable sniff test readings. Subsequently a gas odor assurance database has been developed that assures adequate odorization by helping maintain information on odor level and odorant concentration testing. GOA is based on MS Access and schedules sniff tests and stain tube readings, contains report generation, data tables to track test systems, employee testers, test instruments, odorizers and test results. Only one to two hours per month are necessary for data entry and other GOA-related activities on average. The main features for sniff and stain tube tests are discussed.
