The developments arising from a European collaboration project spectroscopy using optical fibers in the marine environment (SOFIE) are reported. The design, construction, and testing of a modular field operable device for in situ measurement of selected pollutants and salinity in seawater is described. An overview of the optodes, the spectroscopic effects used, and the analytes addressed within the SOFIE project are presented.
