In the framework of the national research project Turbotech H, in which Motoren- und Turbinen-Union (MTU), Deutsche Forschungsanstalt für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) and Daimler Chrysler-Forschung & Technologie (DC-F&T) participate, active noise control (ANC) has been tested with a scale model fan for a high bypass ratio aeroengine. MTU's task in this project was to develop a computer code to predict the sound field in the intake of the fan-rig by the use of active control. The primary objective of the numerical study was to specify numbers and locations of actuators (loudspeakers) and error sensors (microphones) to achieve good active control performance under test condition. In adition, requirements for the actuators were defined. The computer model is based on the geometry of an annular or circular duct of rigid walls and infinite length, containing a subsonic axial uniform flow. The modal amplitudes of the primary sound field are input data. The loudspeakers are modeled by acoustic monopoles, distributed around the duct wall. The code allows to simulate ANC with two different control strategies, termed as classical and modal control algorithm. The classical control method is ,used to control all modes of a considered frequency. On the other hand, the modal control is the appropriate means to cancel single dominant modes. For developing an ANC-system, the computer code is a prerequisite tool to design a favourable configuration of actuators and sensors. With the derived design criteria, recommendations are given to specify the numbers of actuators and sensors uniformly distributed around the duct wall at defined axial positions (ring configuration).
