Thixocasting technology was researched and developed in order to realize high-quality, large-sized, thin-walled parts and this technology was applied to the rear outrigger, which is a joint component for aluminum space frames. As a results, even for large cast parts, thin-walled 3.5 mm casting was possible and a weight reduction of 20 %, compared to existing weldable casting techniques (GDC, LPDC) was attained. The contents of the technology obtained through this development are as follows: (1) The effect on the structure of electromagnetic stirring that is the core of thixocasting technology was clarified, and continuous casting with stirring technology was established. (2) The heating methods, heating conditions, and required alloy characteristics of realizing high-quality, large-sized, thin-walled cast parts were found. (3) The mechanism by which mechanical characteristics are obtained by thixocast products with T5 treatment was elucidated and, from the fact that required strength is obtained without solution treatment and quenching, it was found that no additional straightening operation was required. Taking advantage of the above characteristics, thixocasting will contribute to the future conversion of automobile body parts to aluminum.
