The increasing interest in ship safety has led to an optional new class notation for ships that are made from steel plates with excellent crack arrestability even after being plastically deformed by accidents such as collision or grounding. NKK developed high crack arrest steel plates that provide superior crack arrestability after plastic deformation in addition to the arrestability required for hull structural plates. The manufacturing process for the new plate was approved by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK).
