Numerous approaches to the vehicle-based measurement of dynamic wheel loads have been proposed including axle mounted bending strain gauges, axle mounted shear strain gauges, tyre displacement, and tyre pressure. Although these systems have met with various levels of success, the search for a low cost vehicle mounted system for dynamic wheel force measurement continues. A new system based on wheel deflection measurement shows promise for addressing this problem. The system is reasonable in cost and employs innovative data processing techniques to extract wheel force measurement information. Results of system installation on a trailer are reported here.
