Russian R&D institutes developed lately new reliable energy-absorbing devices used for draw-gears of good-transporting wagons. Two absorbers type APE-95-UV3 (95 mm in shift) and APE-120-UV3 (120 mm in shift) based on an original elastomeric material were constructed and successfully tested. The devices showed nominal energy absorptivities 110 kJ and 140 kJ, respectively, and allowed to couple 100-t wagons moving with a velocity 11 km/h and 15 km/h, respectively. The absorbers developed were found more efficient than the spring-based ones because of no need for running-in, high reliability, no hazard of seizure, smooth force characteristics and long life period (more than 16 years).
