New typologies of 3-dimensional composite materials are being developed during the last few years. These new materials constituted by braided, weft or warp knitted and 3-D weaved composites pre-forms, present excellent out of plane mechanical properties. In this paper, tubular energy absorbers built up from carbon-glass hybrid braided composites are analysed by means of finite element method, with explicit integration along time of the dynamical balance equation. A new material model for braided composites is introduced in the open finite element codes by means of subroutines. Braided materials with carbon fibre 0-degree directions, glass fibre on +/- alpha directions are studied. Moreover, different fibre orientation angles and geometry of the triggering devices are analysed in order to obtain the optimum configuration in terms of specific energy absorption.
