Shape understanding is one of the most important capabilities of the human visual system and plays an important role in navigation and traffic control. The aim of this research is to investigate the possibility of the application of the system of shape understanding in different areas of automotive and transportation technology. The process of shape understanding includes creating the concept of shape based on the data acquired in the processing stage. The proposed system of shape understanding operates based on the knowledge of the image processing, decision making and the search strategies as well as the knowledge of shape description and representation distributed among the specialized experts. The main module of the system that carries out the process of shape understanding consists of three different types of experts: the data acquisition expert, the reasoning expert and the end-analysis expert. The system can operate in different modes, called system goals, which make it possible to find the name of the examined object, recognize the object or group objects which possess similar properties.
