The parameters governing the delivery and supply of gas are volume, pressure, consumption profile, purity, temperature requirements, safety and regulatory guidelines. This article draws on experience that can be used to make selection of the delivery mode easier. The supplier and customer must conduct a thorough needs-assessment. Then the supplier can identify the alternative technological and economic solutions. The products supplied by industrial-gas companies are grouped in two main sets: 1) Atmospheric gases, such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, xenon, krypton, neon and compressed air; 2) Non-atmospheric gases, such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, synthesis gas (syngas), nitrous oxide, acetylene and other fuel gases, helium and ozone. In addition, as a separate category, there are a variety of gas mixtures, specialty gases, welding gases, laser gases and calibration gases. The specific supply mode is dictated by the unique and specific needs of the customer. Generally, low-volume customers will use cylinders. The supply and distribution decisions must be tailored to each customer, thereby six primary supply modes for industrial gases are to choose: high-pressure-gas cylinders, liquid cylinders, bulk gas, bulk liquid, onsite generation, and pipeline supply. Security demands as well as the specific design of these supply modes are described in details. Summarizing all the guidelines one can see that choosing the most appropriate and cost-effective supply mode is generally based on technical parameters, economic terms and other factors including safety, real estate availability and local municipal regulations. Flowrate, pressure, consumption profile, purity, temperature, gas or liquid use all affect the decision concerning the optimal mode of supply. Economic factors such as volume of gas needed, hours of consumption per month, local market price and availability of bulk gases are also part of the equation.
