Since market introduction of HID (high intensity discharge) headlamp technology in 1991, customer expectations have been raised significantly with respect to headlamp lighting quality and luminous output. The new lighting power available through HID technology for low beam makes one aspect more and more obvious: High beams are still designed with halogen bulbs and are thus inherently weaker in luminous output than their HID low beam counterparts. Clearly, an HID high beam will be the best choice due to the immense advantage in light output compared to halogen technology. However, the extra cost of an additional electronic ballast for the HID high beam function should be avoided. A new technology for utilizing the advantages of HID automotive lighting for the high beam light function has been realized. Reflection HID headlamp systems can now be equipped with quality HID high beams without the need for additional bulbs, ignition devices or electronic control units while saving constructive space within the headlamp. The constructive space which was previously necessary for a high-performance halogen high beam can now be used for other lighting functions, such as fog lamps, or elements of advanced front lighting systems, such as curve lights.
