New product development can be well performed if attention is paid to the three main factors influencing the design work: technology applied in the design, process and methods used to do it, and people and their knowledge. This paper discusses possible bridges between these factors showing how important is to retain knowledge in order to improve productivity. Both the automotive industry and the agricultural machinery industry in South America deal with resources and technologies coming from different countries but use local manpower. Conflicts are identified and a systematic approach is designed to optimize the overall product development process. Partial results from this research study can be seen in this paper, covering more than 80 worldwide companies (72 subsidiaries in Argentina and Brazil and 8 in USA/Europe) which supply two leading companies in the automotive sector and agricultural machinery equipment. Data was collected through a questionnaire applied in an extensive research in all 80 companies involved in the assembler's supply chain. Three or four persons (directors and managers from engineering, purchasing and manufacturing) responded to the questions in each company studied.
