HIL (Hardware-In-the-Loop) technology is a rapidly emerging discipline of mechatronics with tremendous potential for reducing vehicle development cycle time. HIL dynamic development and testing is an amalgamation of data acquisition, process control, computer modeling, and vehicle component hardware for the purpose of maturing prototype hardware, control algorithms, and integrated systems. HIL blends computing technologies (modeling, simulation, networking, data manipulation, mass storage) with careful measurement and experimentation in an interactive real-time environment where holistic system trade-offs and component operation can be accurately assessed. The setup and method for real-time simulation of HIL systems is described, where the hardware includes power-train systems. Potential issues in power-train HIL simulation setup and execution are outlined.
