During the development process of a product the complete product life cycle must be considered, i.e. concept, design, prototype, process plan, manufacturing, quality check, sell, maintenance and recycling. Various departments are participating in the development process. A generalized development workflow for a mechanical component of an automobile is shown. The concept phase, the design phase and the implementation phase are contained. In concept phase package and basic dimensions of the product are determined. On the basis of the result of this process, initial design data can be derived. In the design phase the product will be refined and validated on the basis of calculations and simulations. The resulting data (CAD models) is the input for creation of prototypes, which are the basis for a lot of 'real-world tests'. The development chain does include several development loops, consisting of several development steps. The results of the implementation phase are the trigger for the start of the serial production. With focus on the entire development process chain, the efficiency of the process can be increased by a decrease of the development loops by computer-based, complete simulation of the product, starting in the concept phase.
