Cameras are described the operation of which is based on CMOS imagers capable of acquiring image information at high frame rates of more than 1000 fps, having short exposure times of several 1000 down to 30 ns. The imagers feature an excellent image quality and exhibit very efficient anti-blooming control and smear suppression. Due to an on-chip electronic shutter that can be fully decoupled from data readout, various operation modes of the camera are possible. It can be used to perform different tasks in motor vehicles such a occupancy detection, precrash sensing, collision avoidance, and parking distance control for driver assistance. Moreover, high-speed cameras can be used in component development, e.g. in the analysis of high-speed motion in crash-tests.
