Environmental concern demands that emissions and fuel consumption of vehicles have to improve considerably in the next 10 years. New technologies for gasoline engines, downsizing with high boosting, direct injection and fully variable valve train systems, are being developed. For Diesel engines, improved components including piezobased injectors and particle filters are expected. In parallel with Gasoline and Diesel advanced hybrid and fuel cell power-plants are being investigated. This paper gives a comparative assessment on the different technologies with a prediction of the introduction dates and volumes into the market. In spite of its already more than 100 years history the combustion engine has made again considerably progress in recent years. Examples are the adaptation of SI-engines to 3 way catalysts and the introduction of direct injection in Diesel engines. However, growing environmental concern and ever increasing customer wishes require even more improvements. New developments in technology are in progress which can improve the conventional combustion engines as well as make possible the introduction of alternative power plants. This paper will give a brief overview on the different technologies. In support of this overview some comparative assessments between the different technologies will be given and a prediction of introduction dates and volumes into the market will be deduced.
