Due to the world-wide reorganisation of the chemical industry, transportation of chemicals is continuously increasing. As a result, the market for chemical and product carriers is growing and is demanding for more versatile, cheaper and safer ships. For years, first 316L then 316LN grades have been widely used instead of coated carbon steel for chemical cargo tanks. Coated carbon steel has remained a common technique only for so-called 'Product Tankers' which carry less aggressive chemicals. These recent years, more and more tanks of new chemical carriers were made of the duplex grade UNS S31803 (UR 45N) which nowadays tends to be a standard. Lower alloyed duplex grades like the molybdenum free UNS S32304 (UR 35N) may be proposed as an alternative to coated carbon steel for product carriers. This paper presents the performances of the S31803 in comparison to 316LN. The main advantages given by such a material like corrosion performance and versatility, mechanical characteristics, welding compatibility with carbon steel, and so on, are presented and discussed. From these basic properties, the various advantages for the yards and for the owners of the chemical tankers are explained and justified. (VDEh)
