The development of low floor tramway led to the demand of very compact units for brake and suspension systems. Rail vehicles equipped with air suspension and hydraulic brakes require the use of two on-board pressure media, increasing the complexity and weight of the components needed. In this paper the advantages of an integrated system for hydraulic suspension and brake are described and compared to steel spring and air suspension. The integrated hydraulic solution has important advantages: 1. Level control is integrated; 2. Hydraulic suspension is lighter and more compact; 3. The combination of hydraulic brakes and air suspension is replaced by a comprehensive hydraulic system, requiring only one pressure medium on board; 4. Hydraulic suspension levels out faster than air suspension. 5. Hydraulic suspension can offer supplementary functions. The main components for the suspension function suspension leg, suspension accumulator and orifice block can be adapted for each specific project to realise the demanded values for ride comfort, stiffness and damping. The functionality of the hydraulic suspension can easily be changed by the software logic of the hydraulic supply and control unit. Integrated hydraulic suspension and brake systems are realised on three projects.
