Hardware-in-the-Loop applications in the automotive industry are becoming increasing popular due to the push to reduce vehicle development time. The HIL environment provides a real-time coupling of the physical hardware and computer simulation. In this framework, hardware components are interchangeable with software models allowing execution of system and subsystem experiments, without using a vehicle for experimental testing. This is particularly useful in the development of a HEV where many of the components may not yet be available. This paper describes regenerative brake system development for a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) using Hardware-in-the-Loop. The paper presents the advantages of using HIL for system development, the brake system development objectives, a description of the HIL laboratory setup, a brief description of the regenerative brake system, and the brake system development process in the laboratory. Laboratory data, and simulation data is also presented.
