The regulations on automotive emission and fuel economy, such as SULEV, EURO IV and 5-liter car, are getting tougher annually. In hand with these regulations, OBD-II (On Board Diagnosis) is being introduced and, more advanced, model based control systems for engines, powertrains and catalysts are inevitable. The processors in the ECU have increased in performance and memory size accordingly over the last few decades. In the paper the authors examined one of the engine controls to meet future European emission regulations and implemented it on a high performance 32-bit RISC processor SH7055F, which was recently released for automotive and industrial use. The authors used the on-chip FPU (Floating-point Processing Unit), which contributes to smaller code size and faster execution time for a numerical algorithm. For a shorter development period, the authors used a bypass environment, where an ECU and a trial (slave) controller are connected via the AUD (Advanced User Debugger) bus in the SH7055F.
