The aggressiveness of friction materials to rotors in conventional braking systems tends to increase according to their friction coefficient, making it difficult to achieve effective braking performance while reducing cold brake judder at the same time. This paper describes a brake design technique that incorporates the following fundamental elements: (1) a semi-corrective design concept for formulating friction materials so as to optimize the friction coefficient and reduce aggressiveness to the rotor through control of the friction interface between the pad and rotor; (2) a caliper and rotor design method for reducing partial rotor abrasion in both braking and non-braking modes.
