This paper describes average trends of automotive fuel qualities in Japan and the result of a comparison with the World-Wide Fuel Charter (WWFC) proposed in 1998. Trends of gasoline quality are described in: 1. Octane number; 2. Reid vapor pressure; 3. Aromatics; 4. Sulfur; 5. Distillation. Trends of diesel fuel quality are described in: 1. Cetane index; 2. Kinematic viscosity; 3. Sulfur; 4. Distillation; 5. Lubricity. The following results were obtained from the investigation: 1. Recently gasoline quality has been kept stable, showing no fluctuation in mean values in almost all properties including octane number and vapor pressure. 2. The sulfur content was about 30 wtppm on average in regular gasoline and was about 7 wtppm on average in premium gasoline. 3. Up to the summer of 1997 when sulfur content in diesel fuel was decreased, diesel fuel quality was being kept stable, showing almost no fluctuation in mean value in many properties. However, change in the cetane index, kinematic viscosity and 10 % distillation temperature (T10) was observed when investigation was conducted in the summer of 1997, that is, just after the reduction of sulfur. 4. Although the average level of diesel fuel lubricity was improved after the summer of 1997 due to the addition of lubricity exceeds the 460 micron target that is specified by ISO. 5. Although motor fuel quality in Japan is coming close to requested values compared with category 3 specified in WWFC, there exist many properties that do not satisfy requested values as yet, both in gasoline and in diesel fuel.
