Short term telematics opportunities are emerging quickly but are different depending on geographic region. The immediate opportunity for emergency and safety telematics (essentially SOS and roadside assistance) is in the US, but there will also be rapid development in Europe, with leading Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) expected to rollout European services at any time now. Europe and Japan are navigation led telematics markets, stimulated in part, by high metropolitan and auto-route congestion levels. Dynamic navigation systems whereby congestion alerts are sent to the car and sometimes integrated with navigation systems are emerging. There is strong user interest in automatic roadside assistance. Emergency and safety will become a 'core' telematics application. Commuting levels are very high in certain countries and seem to cross correlate with interest levels for customised traffic information. There will be a divergence of available mobile applications and telematics will be an applications led market. By 2006, in SA's view 40-50 % of cars will have a telematics' capability either based in-vehicle or via 'plugged' devices, and the telematics systems market will be worth US Dollar 25bn.
