As a drive system for the next generation electric railways, the authors have been making research and development efforts on a direct drive traction motor system without the conventional reduction gear system. As one of the promising application, they started a co-operative research and development project on the direct drive traction motor system for the next generation commuter train. In the project, the authors manufactured three types of experimental motors. To reduce the mass and to increase the efficiency of the traction motor, they introduced a permanent magnet synchronous motor for the first time in the field of railway traction. These experimental motors are mounted on a bogie of series 103 commuter train which is a typical commuter EMU used in JNR and Japan Railway Companies for a long time. Test runs were made on a track section of JR East. And the authors obtained successful test results.
